The Australian Military Ordinariate ( English : Military Ordinariate of Australia ) is a military ordinariate in Australia and responsible for the Australian armed forces .
history
The Military Ordinary in Australia provides pastoral care to uniformed members of the Australian Navy , Army and Air Force , their families and civilians who are employed in the Department of Defense and are of Roman Catholic denomination. It was established by Pope Paul VI. Erected on March 6, 1969. By mutual agreement between the Holy See and the Commonwealth of Australia , the seat of the Australian Military Ordinary is in Campbell .
In 1912 the Catholic Bishops of Australia commissioned Archbishop of Melbourne Thomas Joseph Carr to open talks with the Department of Defense to appoint military chaplains. The first military chaplain to the rank of bishop was Archbishop Carr. He had the status of Major General (2 stars).
