The Diocese of Cairns (Latin Dioecesis Cairnensis , English Diocese of Cairns ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Australia with its seat in Cairns , Queensland . It covers the northern part of Queensland.

history

Pope Pius IX founded the Vicariate Apostolic Queensland on January 30, 1877 out of territory of the Diocese of Brisbane . The Italian missionaries , who stayed until 1884, encountered resistance from local Irish lay people. The differences of opinion were ended by an interdict in November 1883 and the Vicar Apostolic Paul Fortini had to leave the city of Herberton . The Vicariate Apostolic Office was then turned over to the Augustinians from Ireland , who met the shortage of clergy with foreign callings. On May 10, 1887, it took the name of the Vicariate Apostolic Cooktown. On July 8, 1941, the Curia was moved from Cooktown to Cairns and made the diocese of the current name.

The area of the diocese was expanded on February 14, 1967 by the parish Thursday Island , which was originally part of the Vicariate Apostolic Queensland, but in 1885 became part of the Diocese of Victoria . On May 28, 1967 the foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid, which was then consecrated on July 8, 1968.
