Eric Lander
Eric Steven Lander (born February 3, 1957 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American mathematician and biologist .
Life
Lander earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Princeton University in Princeton , New Jersey in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Oxford in the UK . In 1981 he received an assistant professorship ( assistant professor , later associate professor ) for managerial economics at Harvard Business School in Cambridge , Massachusetts .
In 1986, Lander also became a member of the Whitehead Institute there and in 1990 moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a professor of biology , where he founded the Whitehead / MIT Center for Human Genome Research , which in turn became the Broad Institute in 2003 as a joint Harvard project University and MIT. Lander also holds a professorship in systems biology at Harvard Medical School .
In 2008 he was named vice chairman of the United States President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology , a division of the Executive Office of the President of the United States . On May 20, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences .
Act
Lander has made a decisive contribution to the "revolution in genome research ". With his working group he developed genome maps for mapping genes in the genome and automation techniques for gene analysis . The Whitehead Institute Center for Genome Research at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research , which he co-founded and directs, has identified numerous human genes and made the data available to the global scientific community. Lander and his institute played a leading role in the human genome project worldwide .
