John Alexius Bathersby

John Alexius Bathersby (born July 26, 1936 in Stanthorpe , † March 9, 2020 in Brisbane ) was an Australian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane .

Life

After his philosophical and theological training in the Pius XII seminary in Banyo, Queensland, John Alexius Bathersby was ordained priestly on June 30, 1961 in St. Joseph's Church in Stanthorpe by the Bishop of Toowoomba , William Joseph Brennan . From 1962 to 1969 he was a pastor in the Goondiwindi parish. He studied theology in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Faculty of Teresianum . From 1972 to 1979 he was a spiritual at the Pius XII seminary. In 1982 he completed a doctorate in spirituality in Rome and then returned to the Pius XII seminar.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cairns on January 17, 1986 . The Archbishop of Brisbane, Francis Roberts Rush , donated him episcopal ordination on March 20, 1986 ; Co- consecrators were John Ahern Torpie , Old Bishop of Cairns, and Edward Francis Kelly MSC , Bishop of Toowoomba. He was named Archbishop of Brisbane on December 3, 1991, and inducted into office on January 30 of the next year. Pope Benedict XVI accepted on November 14, 2011 the resignation put forward by John Alexius Bathersby for reasons of age.

Bathersby was involved in ecumenism and was involved in the International Catholic-Methodist Dialogue and the Australian Catholic-Uniting Church Dialogue from 1989 to 1995 . From 1997 to 2002 he was President of the National Council of Churches in Australia . Pope John Paul II appointed him to lead the International Anglican-Roman Catholic Working Group (IARCCUM) in 2001.

In 1997, John Alexius Bathersby was the first Grand Prior of the newly founded Lieutenancy of Queensland-Australia of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
