The Archdiocese of Brisbane ( Latin : Archidioecesis Brisbanensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Brisbane , Australia .

history

Under Pope Pius IX. was founded on April 12, 1859 from the Archdiocese of Sydney out the Diocese of Brisbane. The first bishop was the Irishman James Quinn (1819–1881). In 1877 the Vicariate Apostolic of Queensland was founded, from 1941 the Diocese of Cairns . In 1882 the Rockhampton diocese was spun off .

On May 10, 1887, Pope Leo XIII. the elevation of the previous diocese of Brisbane to an archdiocese . In 1929 the bishopric Toowoomba was spun off . The Suffragan Townsville was founded in 1930 out of the Rockhampton diocese.

Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Brisbane stretches in the south from the border between the states of Queensland and New South Wales and runs north about 350 km along the east coast and the Sunshine Coast from Queensland via Gin Gin to Maryborough . In the west, the area of ​​the Archdiocese reaches Eidsvold and Gatton and runs south over Auburn and Blackbutt down to the McPherson Range on the Queensland / New South Wales border.
