Gatton

Gatton is a city with 6,327 inhabitants in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is 90 kilometers west of Brisbane and 40 kilometers east of Toowoomba . Gatton is located in the Lockyer Valley and is the administrative seat of the administrative area of the same name (LGA) Lockyer Valley Region . Located on the Warrego Highway , it is one of the earliest rural settlements in Queensland.

history

Major Edmund Lockyer was the first European to cross this area in 1825. The first settlers settled in the 1840s and the town was officially founded on April 13, 1855, probably taking its name from the town of the same name in Roxburghshire , Scotland . Three years later, Gatton became an important stopover for the stagecoach from Brisbane to the Darling Downs region. Its own post office was opened on January 1, 1866.

It was not until the connection to the Ipswich railway line in 1875 that the town experienced a boom as an important service center for the surrounding farms.

Even today Gatton is the center of this agricultural region, on whose black, fertile soil mainly potatoes , onions and vegetables are grown. In addition, livestock and dairy farming also play an important role.

The Gatton murders

Gatton gained some notoriety for a triple murder that occurred on December 26, 1898. Three siblings were shot or beaten to death on their way home from a dance event. Above all, the following investigations, with some hair-raising errors by all those involved, caused a sensation throughout Australia. So the crime scene was not secured and subsequently devastated by numerous onlookers. During the autopsy, the coroner forgot to secure the pistol from the head of one of the victims and the prime suspect, although he was seen washing a blood-stained sweater, was able to run away a few days later.
