Alex McCalla

Alex Frederick McCalla (born April 21, 1937 in Edmonton ) is a Canadian agricultural economist . He is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1954, he worked for three years on his family's dairy and grain farm in Bremner (near Edmonton). From 1957 to 1961 he studied Agricultural Sciences ( B.Sc. ) at the University of Alberta . During his studies he was in a debating club and was president of the student council . After completing his bachelor's degree, he studied economics ( MA , 1963). His Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics in 1966 from the University of Minnesota . In the same year he came to Davis as an assistant professor .

He has been advising the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research since the 1970s

In 1994 McCalla retired early as a professor at Davis and became director of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Division of the World Bank . In 1999 he retired.

McCalla taught microeconomics , agricultural and trade policy, and development. His research interests are international agricultural trade, the international impact of US agricultural policy, agriculture and development, and world food policy.
