Leonard Faulkner

Leonard Anthony Faulkner (born December 5, 1926 in Booleroo Center , South Australia , Australia - † May 7, 2018 in Adelaide , South Australia) was an Australian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide .

Life

Leonard Faulkner, the oldest of ten children, studied theology and philosophy in the seminary in Rostrevor. The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide , Pietro Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi , ordained him on January 1, 1950 in Rome as priest of the Archdiocese of Adelaide.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Townsville on September 14, 1967 . The Archbishop of Adelaide, Matthew Beovich , ordained him episcopal on November 28 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Francis Roberts Rush , Bishop of Rockhampton , and Brian Patrick Ashby , Bishop of Christchurch .

On September 2, 1983, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Adelaide by Pope John Paul II . After James William Gleeson's resignation , he succeeded him on June 19, 1985 in office as Archbishop of Adelaide. On December 3, 2001, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Faulkner was the first Australian bishop to appoint women to high church offices after the Second Vatican Council and later to found an AIDS conference at the diocesan level. He was committed to supporting migrants and refugees.
