Andrew Killian

Andrew Killian (born October 26, 1872 in Edenderry , County Offaly , Ireland , † June 28, 1939 in Melbourne ) was a Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

Andrew Killian was born in Edenderry, County Offaly in October 1872 to Nicholas Killian and his wife Eliza Josephine (nee Ryan). Killian attended Mungret Jesuit College in Limerick and St Patrick's College in Carlow . At the Royal University of Ireland he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1894 . He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1898 . In the same year, Killian traveled to Australia.

His first assignment was to serve as an assistant priest in the Bourke Ward, western New South Wales . In 1907 he visited Ireland. In 1908, Killian was transferred to Broken Hill . In the following years he held various offices, among other things he was parish priest, administrator of the cathedral, dean and vicar general . In 1919 he received the papal honorary title of Papal Honorary Prelate .

Because of his administrative talent demonstrated at Broken Hill, Killian was appointed Bishop of Port Augusta on February 26, 1924 , and was ordained episcopal at Peterborough Pro-Cathedral on June 15, 1924 by the Archbishop of Adelaide , Robert William Spence OP . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes , William Hayden , and the Bishop of Wagga Wagga , Joseph Wilfred Dwyer .

In 1926 he attended the ' Eucharistic Congress in Chicago . Part of Killian's travels included an audience with Pope Pius XI. in Rome and another visit to Ireland.

On July 11, 1933, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Adelaide and titular archbishop of Ratiaria . With the death of Robert William Spence on November 5, 1934, Killian succeeded him as Archbishop.

In 1938 Killian fell ill with cancer . He died on June 28, 1939 in Mercy Hospital in East Melbourne and was buried in West Terrace cemetery in Adelaide.
