Philip Edward Wilson (born October 2, 1950 in Cessnock , New South Wales , † January 17, 2021 ) was an Australian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide . He was president of the Australian Bishops' Conference and was convicted of covering up sexual abuse and acquitted; he was instrumental in reforming the church's way of dealing with abuse cases in Australia.

Life

Philip Wilson, the eldest of five siblings, studied philosophy and theology at Saint Patrick's Seminary in Manly and the Catholic Institute in Sydney. The Auxiliary Bishop in Sydney , Edward Clancy , donated to him on August 23, 1975, the priestly ordination . He initially worked in pastoral care in New South Wales . In 1977/78 he completed a postgraduate education in New York City . In 1978 he became director of religious education in the Diocese of Maitland (now the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle). In 1983 he took over a pastor's position in Maitland and in 1987 he was appointed vicar general . From 1990 to 1995 he studied canon law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Wollongong on April 12, 1996 . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Sydney, Edward Bede Cardinal Clancy, on July 10 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Leo Morris Clarke , Bishop Emeritus of Maitland-Newcastle , and William Edward Murray , Bishop Emeritus of Wollongong.

On November 30, 2000, the Pope appointed him Coadjutor Archbishop of Adelaide. When Leonard Faulkner retired on December 3, 2001, he succeeded him in the office of Archbishop of Adelaide. His Latin motto Non nobis domine is the beginning of Psalm 113: 9 ( Non nobis Domine, Domine non nobis, Domine, sed nomini, sed nomini tuo da gloriam , in German: Not us, Lord, Lord not us, Lord, but to the name, your name give glory ).

Philip Wilson was President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference ACBC from 2006 to 2012 and its Vice President from 2012 to 2016.

From 2003 to 2018 Wilson was the first Grand Prior of the newly founded Lieutenancy of South Australia of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

On May 22, 2018, a Newcastle court found Wilson guilty of preventing a pedophile priest from being held accountable for allegedly wronging at least four boys in the 1970s. Wilson then declared that he would leave his office until further notice ("stand aside"). On June 3, 2018, Pope Francis appointed the Bishop of Port Pirie , Gregory O'Kelly , as Apostolic Administrator sede plena for the Archdiocese of Adelaide, officially suspending Wilson's office as Archbishop. On July 3, 2018 Wilson was to one year imprisonment sentenced without parole. This made him the highest-ranking Catholic clergyman in the world to date to be tried on charges of covering up child abuse . Since Wilson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at an early stage, the court allowed him to serve the sentence as house arrest with an electronic ankle cuff . Wilson laid appeal against his conviction and rejected a resignation further. On July 19, 2018, Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull appealed to Pope Francis to dismiss the bishop; Australia's National Council of Priests (NCP), to which about 1,700 priests belong, expressly supported this and other appeals to the Pope, since the impeachment serves "the good of the Church in Australia and the good of the people of God in the Archdiocese of Adelaide" would. On July 30, 2018, the Pope accepted Wilson's resignation. He started his sentence on August 14, 2018. The appeals court acquitted Wilson in December 2018.

Philip Wilson died on January 17, 2021 at the age of 70; his health had been limited for a long time and suffered from cancer.
