William Poynter (born May 20, 1762 in Petersfield , Hampshire , † November 26, 1827 in London ) was an English Catholic bishop and Vicar Apostolic in London.

Life

Poynter was trained at the Pontifical English College in Douai and ordained a priest in 1786. He worked as a professor and later as prefect of studies until the college was dissolved in the French Revolution .

After 18 months of imprisonment, the college's residents were released and went to England in March 1795. Poynter went with his students to the Old Hall in Ware ( Hertfordshire , southern England ), where he played a leading role in founding St Edmund's College . First he was Vice President and from 1801 to 1813 President.

On March 6, 1803, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Alia and Coadjutor , Vicar Apostolic of the London District, due to an incurable disease of the incumbent Vicar Apostolic of the London District, John Douglass . Douglass ordained him bishop on May 29, 1803, at St. Edmunds College with the assistance of William Gibson, OSB, Vicar Apostolic of the Northern District, and William Gregory Sharrock, OSB, Vicar Apostolic of the Western District.

His position was attacked by Vicar Apostolic of the Midlands District, John Milner.

During his episcopate, Poynter visited Paris in 1814, 1815, 1817 and 1822 to reclaim the property of the college in Douai, which was confiscated during the French Revolution. He received the support of the Duke of Wellington , the Lord Castlereagh and the British commissioners appointed for this purpose.

Eventually, on behalf of the bishops, he received the college and £ 30,000 back. The main demands of £ 120,000 were not met.
