The Diocese of Port-Louis ( Latin : Dioecesis Portus Ludovici , French : Diocèse de Port-Louis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Port Louis on the island of Mauritius.
Its territory includes the Republic of Mauritius with the exception of Rodrigues Island and the British territory in the Indian Ocean .
history
The diocese was founded on June 6, 1837 as the Apostolic Vicariate Mauritius from the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope , raised to an independent diocese on December 7, 1847 and gave up the Seychelles as early as 1852 , where an independent Apostolic Prefecture Seychelles was founded.
Originally a mission led by English Benedictines , it became the responsibility of the Irish Spiritans at the beginning of the 20th century . 1950 already 141,941 Catholics (33.9%) in 37 parishes with 27 diocesan priests , 34 religious priests and 310 nuns counting, there was on 31 October 2002, the island of Rodrigues in support of the Apostolic Vicariate Rodrigues , and then still numbered 245,639 Catholics (21, 5%) in 49 parishes with 58 diocesan priests, 42 religious priests and 234 religious sisters on 1,843 km².
