Port Louis Cathedral
The Cathedral of Port Louis (en: St. Louis Cathedral ; fr: Cathédrale Saint-Louis de Port-Louis ) is the main Catholic church in the Diocese of Port-Louis and is located in the capital of Mauritius , Port Louis .
history
Between 1752 and 1756 Jean-François Charpentier de Cossigny had the first church built at the current location. This was finally destroyed in the cyclone of 1760 . A new building fell victim to another cyclone on April 9, 1773. The next new building took place in 1782. This also had structural weaknesses and was renovated in 1814 under Robert Townsend Farquhar , the first British governor, and was given the current shape in 1819. Since the formation of the diocese in 1847, the church has been the seat of the bishop. The last renovation took place in 2007.
location
The cathedral is located in the heart of the capital. The forecourt of the cathedral is located on the central Jules Koenig Street. The park has been called Jardin du Parvis since 2009 (before the redesign it was used as a parking lot) and is characterized by the listed fountain. This fountain in the form of an obelisk adorned with sculptures of lions was built under Governor Vicomte de Souillac in 1786. There is a large crucifix to the left of the church . Behind the cathedral is the diocese building.
