Alfred Xuereb (born October 14, 1958 in Victoria on the Maltese island of Gozo ) is a Maltese clergyman, archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See . He was Pope Francis' first private secretary until 2014 and general secretary of the Vatican Economic Secretariat from 2014 to 2018 .

Life

Xuereb studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Malta. After his ordination in 1984 he completed a doctorate at the Pontifical Faculty Teresianum , where in 1989 he wrote a dissertation on The Paschal Mystery in Christian Life. Biblical, liturgical and theological-spiritual prospects in the light of the teaching of Vatican II for Dr. theol. PhD .

He then returned to the pastoral ministry in his homeland, but was called to Rome again in 1991 as Secretary of the Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University . From 1995 he worked in the State Secretariat of the Roman Curia in the Vatican . Finally, since 2000, he served in the prefecture of the papal house . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Papal Honorary Prelate on September 9, 2003 . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him in 2007 to succeed Mieczysław Mokrzycki as the second private secretary alongside Georg Gänswein . Since then he has accompanied the Pope on his travels. Xuereb was inducted into the Order of Malta in 2009 .

After the election of Pope Francis , he became his first private secretary in 2013. On November 28, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him as his personal liaison to the two papal commissions for the Vatican financial institution IOR and the financial administration of the Holy See . On March 3, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him General Secretary of the new Vatican Economic Secretariat. He was succeeded as the Pope's first private secretary by the Argentinian Fabián Pedacchio Leaniz , previously the second secretary. Yoannis Lahzi Gaid became the second secretary . On February 26, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him Titular Archbishop pro hac vice of Amantea and Apostolic Nuncio in South Korea and Mongolia . The Pope himself donated him and the simultaneously appointed José Avelino Bettencourt and Waldemar Stanisław Sommertag on March 19 of the same year the episcopal ordination .
