José Avelino Bettencourt (born May 23, 1962 in the Azores , Portugal ) is a Canadian clergyman, archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See . From 2012 to 2018 he was chief of protocol at the Papal State Secretariat .

Life

José Avelino Bettencourt emigrated with his family from the Azores to Canada. He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1993 and initially served in the Archdiocese of Ottawa . In 1997 he joined the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome and, after studying canon law and completing his diplomatic training, he became chargé d'affaires in 1999 and secretary of the nunciature in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2000 . Since 2002 he has worked in the Second Section for Relations with States in the State Secretariat of the Holy See . In 2003 he was appointed papal honorary chaplain ( monsignor ).

On November 14, 2012 he was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Head of Protocol of the State Secretariat of the Vatican. In the Vatican Central Authority, Bettencourt was responsible for contacting the embassies accredited to the Holy See and for planning papal audiences for state guests. He succeeded Fortunatus Nwachukwu .

On February 26, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him titular archbishop pro hac vice of Aemona and apostolic nuncio . On March 1 of the same year he was appointed Nuncio in Armenia and a week later Nuncio in Georgia . The Pope himself donated him and the simultaneously appointed Alfred Xuereb and Waldemar Stanisław Sommertag on March 19 of the same year the episcopal ordination .
