Mieczysław Halka Ledóchowski
Mieczysław Cardinal Halka Ledóchowski (born October 29, 1822 in Górki ( Diocese of Sandomir in Poland ), † July 22, 1902 in Rome , Italy) was Archbishop of Gniezno and Posen , Primate of Poland and later a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
On July 13, 1845, Ledóchowski received the sacrament of ordination . In 1861 Pius IX appointed him . on September 30th as Titular Archbishop of Thebae and on October 1st as Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium . He was ordained bishop on November 3rd of the same year by Cardinal Camillo Di Pietro ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi and Alessandro Franchi .
On January 8, 1866, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Archbishop of Gniezno and Posen. Due to his steadfast refusal to obey the newly introduced pulpit paragraph during the Kulturkampf in Prussia , he was imprisoned by the Prussian authorities for two years in Ostrowo . This gave him the reputation of a martyr , especially among the Polish population in the province of Posen and in West Prussia , but also among German-speaking Catholics. His elevation to cardinal was still in custody on March 15, 1875. As a cardinal priest he received the titular church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli . He was also one of the cardinals who attended the 1878 conclave .
Pope Leo XIII. appointed Ledóchowski on January 26, 1892 prefect of the Congregation for the Propaganda of the Faith (Propaganda Fide) . Thereupon he resigned as Archbishop of Gniezno on February 2 and became cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina on November 30 .
His second nephew Vladimir Ledóchowski was a general of the Jesuits , a second niece was the holy founder of the order Ursula Ledóchowska , and another was the blessed founder of the order Maria Teresia Ledóchowska .
Mieczysław Halka Ledóchowski was invested in the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Giuseppe Valerga , the Patriarch of Jerusalem .
He was an honorary member of the KÖStV Austria Wien in the ÖCV (founded 1876).
