Anthony Olubunmi Cardinal Okogie (born June 16, 1936 in Lagos , Nigeria ) is retired Archbishop of Lagos .

Life

Anthony Olubunmi Ecology, from a Nigerian aristocratic family, studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Ibadan and Rome . In 1966 he obtained the Licentiate of Theology and received on 11 December of the same year, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as a pastor in Idumagbo and as head of the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Lagos. He also taught Catholic religion at King's College and served as a military chaplain in the Nigerian Civil War.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 5, 1971 titular bishop of Mascula and auxiliary bishop in Oyo . He received his episcopal ordination on August 29th of the same year Owen McCoy , Bishop of Oyo. Co- consecrators were Anthony Saliu Sanusi , Bishop of Ijebu-Ode , and Alexius Obabu Makozi , Auxiliary Bishop in Lokoja . On April 13, 1973 Paul VI appointed him. to the Archbishop of Lagos. From 1994 to 2000 Okogie was President of the Nigerian Bishops' Conference. He was also President of the Christian Association of Nigeria . In late 2001 he campaigned for the rescue of Safiya Hussaini, who had been sentenced to death by stoning, and offered his own life for hers. Hussaini was released in 2002.

On October 21, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Beata Vergine Maria del Monte Carmelo a Mostacciano in the college of cardinals . He participated in the 2005 and 2013 conclaves .

Pope Benedict XVI On May 25, 2012 he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. Cardinal Okogie headed the Archdiocese of Lagos until the inauguration of his successor Alfred Adewale Martins on August 4th of the same year.
