The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos ( lat. : Archidioecesis Lagosensis ) is in Nigeria located Metropolitan Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church .

history

The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Lagos is the Apostolic Vicariate of Dahomey, founded on August 28, 1860 from the Apostolic Vicariate of Guinea Superiore e Inferiore e di Sierra Leone, today the Archdiocese of Libreville , Gabon . In 1870 the name changed to the Apostolic Vicariate Costa di Benin and in 1943 to the Apostolic Vicariate Lagos. Pope Pius XII raised the vicariate to today's Archdiocese of Lagos on April 18, 1950.

In 1969 the suffragan dioceses Ijebu-Ode and 1997 Abeokuta were established.
