Anthony Saliu Sanusi

Anthony Saliu Sanusi (born January 2, 1911 in Iperu , Nigeria , † December 7, 2009 in Nigeria) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Ijebu-Ode in Nigeria.

Life

Anthony Saliu Sanusi was ordained a priest on December 17, 1944 in Lagos , Nigeria.

On May 29, 1969 he was by Paul VI. appointed first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Ijebu-Ode . Pope Paul VI himself donated to him on August 1, 1969 the episcopal ordination in Kampala . Co- consecrators were the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and later Cardinal Sergio Pignedoli and the Archbishop of Kampala and later Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga .

After the death of John Kwao Amuzu Aggey in 1972, he was also Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Lagos . His resignation was granted in 1984 by Pope John Paul II .

Bishop Sanusi, known as Baba , established six secondary schools and 46 elementary schools in his diocese of Ijebu-Ode, all of which later became the property of the state free of charge. Five private primary schools as well as two secondary schools remained in ecclesiastical sovereignty, as did the two hospitals he initiated. He was the initiator of the Missionary Society of St. Paul (MSP) .

At the time of his death, he was the fifth oldest bishop in the Catholic Church and the oldest bishop in Nigeria.
