Gabriel Zubeir Wako
Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako (born February 27, 1941 in Mboro , Sudan ) is a Sudanese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Khartoum .
Life
Gabriel Zubeir Wako studied Catholic theology and received on 21 July 1963, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In the course of further studies he specialized in pastoral theology and obtained a licentiate in theology.
The first stages of his priestly service led to parish and school pastoral care in the Gogria district. He then led a boys' seminar for many years and worked as a boy scout pastor .
From 1974 to 1979 he led the diocese of Wau as bishop . In 1979 he became coadjutor and finally Archbishop of Khartoum in 1981. Since 1992 he has been chairman of the Sudanese Bishops' Conference .
Pope John Paul II accepted him on October 21, 2003 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Atanasio a Via Tiburtina in the college of cardinals .
During Sunday mass on October 10, 2010, Zubeir Wako escaped an assassination attempt by a Muslim from the Misseriye tribal association .
Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on December 10, 2016.
