Marcello Zago

Marcello Zago OMI (born August 9, 1932 in Villorba , Italy, † March 1, 2001 in Rome ) was an Italian religious priest and curial archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After initially studying in the diocesan seminary, Marcello Zago entered the novitiate of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary in 1955 . After he was ordained a priest in 1959 , he lived and worked until 1966 as a missionary and instructor of the Oblates in Laos . During a few years as an instructor in the International House of Oblates , he completed his PhD in Missiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University before returning to Laos in 1971. In 1986 he was elected Superior General of the Oblates.

After the end of his second term, he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and Titular Archbishop of Rusellae by Pope John Paul II on March 28, 1998 . He was ordained bishop by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Jozef Tomko , on April 25, 1998 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Co- consecrators were the former Vicar Apostolic of Luang Prabang in Laos, Alessandro Staccioli OMI, and the Bishop of Treviso , Paolo Magnani .

He played an essential role in the preparation of the 1986 World Prayer Meeting for Peace in Assisi. He died on March 1, 2001.
