Federico Ubaldo Baldeschi Colonna (born September 2, 1625 in Perugia , † October 4, 1691 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church, who was adopted by the noble Colonna family.

biography

He was born on September 2, 1624 in Perugia as Federico Ubaldo Baldeschi , son of Jacopo Baldeschi and Artemisia della Concia. The history of his formation is unclear, but he was called to Rome as a young man to assist Cardinal Giovanni Giacomo Panciroli . Under the auspices of Panciroli, he was appointed governor first of Faenza , then Sabina and finally Fabriano . Soon afterwards he became a trainee lawyer for the Apostolic Signature .

At the age of 40, Baldeschi was appointed titular archbishop of Caesarea in Palestine in 1665 and only a few days later appointed nuncio in Switzerland . He held this position until 1668. In 1668 he became secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide . In early 1673 he was appointed Assessor of the Roman Inquisition .

In 1673 Baldeschi was named cardinal in pectore by Pope Clement X , and his appointment was published a year later. Another year later he became cardinal priest of San Marcello al Corso . After his elevation to Cardinal, he was adopted by Sciarra Colonna di Carbognano and began to use his adoptive name, that of the Colonna family .

After the death of Clement X. he took part in the conclave of 1676 , which Pope Innocent XI. chose. From 1683 to 1684 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . The following year he became cardinal priest of the Basilica of Sant'Anastasia al Palatino .

He took part in the conclave of 1689 , in which Pope Alexander VIII was elected, as well as in the conclave of 1691 . It eventually became Pope Innocent XII. elected, but without Colonna, who had to leave the conclave due to illness.

Colonna never fully recovered and died on October 4, 1691. He was buried in the Church of the Propaganda Fide .
