Lothar Stengel (born August 27,  1941 ) is a former German boxer .

Life

The  boxer from Kaiserslautern became German amateur runner-up in the weight class up to 81 kilograms in 1965 . In the final he lost to Peter Gerber . At the end of November 1965, Stengel  made his debut as a professional boxer in Frankfurt am Main . In his sixth fight, the still unbeaten stalk from Bruno Müller's boxing stable was given the opportunity to fight Heinrich Meinhardt for the German light heavyweight championship in Cologne at the beginning of September 1966 . “His opponent, Heini Meinhardt from Hamburg, was a big favorite before the fight. But then it failed because of the enthusiasm of the young man from the Palatinate, ”reported the Hamburger Abendblatt about Stengel's victory. In the seventh round, Meinhardt's trainer Franz Mück threw in the towel and gave up the fight, Stengel was German champion.

He successfully defended the championship title three times until October 1967, most recently against Klaus Stockmann in his hometown of Kiel . Stengel and Stockmann fought a “ring battle”, “for twelve rounds they beat each other with left hooks (Stockmann) and right straight lines (Stengel). But the master was smarter and better trained, ”reported the Hamburger Abendblatt . Stengel knocked his opponent to the ground in the twelfth round.

At the beginning of December 1967 he became European champion, Stengel defeated the Italian Piero del Papa in Frankfurt am Main . The victory of Stengel, who at that time worked as a printer and miner, was considered a "huge sensation". The tough challenger was not impressed by the sometimes unclean pace of the Italian. Del Papa, who went to the ground in the fifth round after an uppercut Stengels and was counted, complained of a rule violation by the German with a headbutt and a thumb blow in the eye, which the officials could not confirm when reviewing the television footage.

In early February 1968, Stengel fought former world champion Harold Johnson from the United States and lost. It was his first loss as a professional boxer. His European title was on the line in September 1968 in a duel with the Dane Tom Bogs . The fight took place in Copenhagen . After two minutes and 42 seconds of the first round the decision was made and Stengel was defeated. The Dane attacked Stengel effectively from the start and hit him with the left hook. Defending champion Stengel went down for the first time. Then Bogs hit him hard again, the German fell again, and Stengel didn't recover from the third rainfall. Stengel, who was rewarded with 50,000 D-Marks for the fight, commented on the defeat in the first round that he hadn't gotten going and was beaten before he could fight.

Between the end of 1968 and the beginning of 1971, Stengel did not contest a fight, then he was back in the ring and had five wins and two defeats by the end of October 1975. He lost his last fight against Bernd August .
