Piero del Papa (born August 25, 1938 in Pisa , † October 27, 2018 in Pisa) was an Italian boxer . He was European light heavyweight professional boxer champion .

Career

Amateur career

Piero del Papa only had a relatively short amateur period, but it was quite successful. He became the Italian light heavyweight champion in 1960. Not he was sent to the Olympic Games in Rome , but the internationally experienced Giulio Saraudi .

Profile career

Piero del Papa's professional career began on December 7, 1960 in Bologna with a knockout victory in the 4th round over his compatriot Angelo Greco. In the next four years he fought mainly in Tuscany and Piedmont and remained undefeated in 30 fights. He won against such good opponents as the US-American Freddie Mack , Johnny Halafihi from France and his compatriots Guerrino Scattolin and Luigi Napoleone .

On December 7, 1962, Piero del Papa was Italian light heavyweight champion in Rome by winning points after 12 rounds over Piero Tomasoni . He defended this title on September 14, 1963 in Pisa by winning points over Guerriono Scattolin and on August 6, 1964 in Ascoli by a technical knockout victory in the 11th round over Benito Michelon . Against the same boxer he lost his Italian championship title on December 7, 1964 in the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome by losing points after 12 rounds. This was his first loss as a professional.

On March 11, 1966 Piero del Papa was then in Rome by a points victory after 15 rounds over his compatriot Giulio Rinaldi European light heavyweight champion. In an effort to get a world championship fight , Piero del Papa boxed on July 11, 1966 in San Francisco against the former world champion Carl Olson from the USA . In a hard-fought encounter, Olsson was awarded a narrow 2-1 point win. Piero del Papa therefore had to put his American plans on hold.

In the next few years Piero del Papa successfully defended his European title three times. He kept his title on August 17, 1966 in Pisa , because his fight against the Scots Chic Calderwood had to be canceled due to rain. On November 17, 1966 he won over the German boxing-effant terrible Wilhelm von Homburg (Norbert Grupe) in Berlin , because he was disqualified in the 11th round because of his unfair way of fighting. The Finn Pekka Kokkonen also failed to dethrone Piero del Papa on April 7, 1967 in Helsinki . Del Papa won this championship fight unanimously on points after 15 rounds.

Somewhat surprisingly, Piero del Papa then lost his European Championship title on August 9, 1967 in Frankfurt / Main to the German Lothar Stengel , who very few experts had expected a victory over del Papa. Stengel won by knockout in the fifth round. A protest del Papas because of an alleged headbutt and an alleged hit of the thumb in the eye were invalidated by the television footage.

Against the Dane Tom Bogs , who had meanwhile taken the title from Stengel, he tried on January 28, 1969 in Copenhagen to become European light heavyweight champion again, but lost this fight on points. On February 6, 1970, however, he fought for himself in Milan for the European light heavyweight title by winning points over Ivan Prebeg from Yugoslavia again. He successfully defended this title on September 11, 1970 in Frankfurt / Main against his challenger Rüdiger Schmidtke .

On November 27, 1970 Piero del Papa defended this title in Berlin against Horst Benedens from Germany with a technical knockout victory in the 15th round and then finally lost it on January 22, 1971 in Berlin to the German Conny Velensek , to whom he lost after 15 rounds on points. Piero del Papa fought six more times over the next two years. Of these fights he lost four, but against well-known people Vicento Rondon from Argentina, Rudi Lubbers from the Netherlands and Rüdiger Schmidtke and Arno Prick from Germany.

further activities

After his boxing career, Piero del Papa made a name for himself as a film actor. Although he did not get any leading roles, he played the rough but lovable fellow in many films. Bud Spencer was also his partner in one of his films .
