Francesco Fontana (Cardinal)
Francesco Luigi Fontana CRSP (born August 28, 1750 in Castelmaggiore as Luigi Maria Fontana , † March 19, 1822 in Rome ) was an Italian Roman Catholic religious and curial cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. From 1807 until his death he was the superior general of his order.
Life
Luigi Maria Fontana joined the order of the Barnabites, made perpetual profession on December 21, 1766 and took the name of the order Francesco Luigi . He studied theology and philosophy in Milan and Bologna , in 1774 he was ordained a priest . After teaching activities for the Barnabites in Milan, he became a religious provincial in Lombardy in 1797 . Under Pope Pius VII he became consultor of the Congregation for the Holy Rites and the Congregation for the Roman and Universal Inquisition .
In 1804 Francesco Fontana accompanied Pius VII to the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte in France. In 1807 he rose to the general superior of the Barnabites. In the following year he was deported to France, between 1811 and 1814 he was imprisoned in Vincennes . After his return to Rome, Pius VII appointed him on July 19, 1814 as secretary of the newly established congregation for extraordinary ecclesiastical affairs, which was subordinate to the State Secretariat .
In the consistory of March 8, 1816, Pius VII accepted him as cardinal priest of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the college of cardinals , on June 30 of the same year he appointed him prefect of the index congregation . On September 24, 1818, Cardinal Fontana finally became Prefect of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide .
Francesco Fontana died in Rome in 1822 and was buried in the Church of San Carlo ai Catinari .
