After completing his studies, Brosin worked from 1959 to 1964 as a research assistant at the University of Leipzig. He received his doctorate from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 1964 with the subject: The water balance of the Bodden chain south of the Darß and Zingst. With special consideration of the water exchange with the Baltic Sea .

From 1965 he worked as a marine scientist, initially at the Maritime Observatory on the Baltic Sea in Zingst and from 1976 to 1990 as an oceanographer at the Warnemünde Institute for Oceanography of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1989 he was appointed professor after having obtained the academic degree of Dr. sc. nat. at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In his dissertation B he dealt with "Investigations into the use of satellite-based remote sensing methods for marine research in the GDR".

His brother, Paul Brosin (* 1938; † 2017), who was two years younger than him, was a geologist and most recently lived as retired mountain director. D. in Erfurt.

The Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde published in 1996 in the context of the "Marine Science Reports" H.-J. Brosin's scientific-historical work “On the history of marine research in the GDR”.

Award

Hans-Jürgen Brosin was awarded the National Prize III in 1987 . Class for science and technology together with Klaus Voigt (* 1934), Wolfgang Fennel (* 1947), Eberhard Hagen (* 1944), Hans-Ulrich Lass and Wolfgang Matthäus (* 1937) from the Institute for Oceanography of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR excellent for theoretical and experimental studies on physical oceanography.
