The Apostolic Prefecture of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Latin: Apostolica Praefectura Sachaliniana Meridionalis ) located in Russia was spun off from the Apostolic Vicariate of Sapporo in Japan on July 18, 1932 as Mission sui juris Karafuto .
Elevated to the Apostolic Prefecture on May 21, 1938 , it changed its name on April 10, 2002 from " Karafuto " to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk . With a size of 40,000 km² and eight parishes, it includes both the south of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands and has only 2,100 Catholics (0.4%) and two religious priests .
The prefecture has been represented by an Apostolic Administrator since 1953 , who was the Bishop of Sapporo until 1989 and who has been in charge of the Bishop of Irkutsk since 2002 .
