Jerzy Mazur, Bishop of Ełk, since 2003

Jerzy Mazur SVD (born August 6, 1953 in Hawłowice , today's Subcarpathian Voivodeship , Poland ) is the Catholic Bishop of Ełk .

Life

Jerzy Mazur entered the seminary of the Steyler missionaries in Pieniężno after graduating from high school . He was ordained a priest there on April 22, 1979 . He studied Catholic theology at the Catholic University of Lublin and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

In 1983 he went to the African mission in Ghana , in 1986 he returned and became professor of missiology in the mission house of Pieniężno. In 1992 he went to Belarus for his order .

On 23 March 1998 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Tabunia and Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Administration of Siberia . He received his episcopal ordination from the Apostolic Nuncio in the Russian Federation , Archbishop John Bukovsky SVD. After the division of the Apostolic Administration into East and West Siberia on May 18, 1999, he became Apostolic Administrator of East Siberia and, after being promoted to a diocese on February 11, 2002, he was the first bishop of the Diocese of St. Joseph of Irkutsk . The position of Apostolic Prefect of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is connected with the office. On April 10, 2002, Bishop Mazur was arrested at Moscow Airport, put on a plane and deported to Poland. For a year he tried to lead his diocese from Poland; on April 17, 2003 he was appointed Bishop of Ełk by the Pope and on June 9, 2003 he was introduced to his new diocese in the Ełk Cathedral.

His motto is: Veni Sancte Spiritus (“Come Holy Spirit”).

In the Polish Bishops' Conference he is chairman of the Commission for Mission and a member of the Commission for Caritas.
