Lucas Moreira Neves
Lucas Cardinal Moreira Neves OP (born September 16, 1925 in São João del Rei in Brazil ; † September 8, 2002 in Rome ) was Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia from 1987 to 1998 and later a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Moreira Neves, the eldest of ten children of a shoemaker and a teacher, entered the Dominican order and studied philosophy and theology in São Paulo and in the French Var until 1951 . He made his profession on March 7, 1945 and was ordained a priest on July 9, 1950 . After he was subprior of the Dominican Convention of Rio de Janeiro from 1952 to 1953 , he worked in various positions in the education sector. From 1966 he was an official for the Brazilian Bishops' Conference.
On June 9, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him auxiliary bishop in São Paulo and titular bishop of Feradi Maius . The Archbishop of São Paulo and later Cardinal Dean , Agnelo Cardinal Rossi , donated him the episcopal ordination on August 26, 1967.
On March 7, 1974, Pope Paul VI appointed him. as Vice-President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity . Lucas Moreira Neves was named pro hac vice titular Archbishop of Feradi Maius and secretary of the Congregation for Bishops on October 15, 1979 . On January 3, 1987, he was named titular archbishop of Forum Novum . On July 9, 1987, he became Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia and Primate of Brazil.
Pope John Paul II accepted him on June 28, 1988 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio in the college of cardinals . Between August 31 and September 4, 1994, Cardinal Moreira Neves represented John Paul II as special envoy to the National Eucharistic Congress of Argentina. On June 25, 1998 he was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto and appointed Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops. In addition, he became President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America .
Moreira Neves became a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras , the Brazilian Academy of Literature in Rio de Janeiro, in 1996 , and became the sixth chairholder of Seat No. 12.
Due to age, he submitted his resignation and retired on September 16, 2000. He succumbed to the consequences of diabetes in September 2002, after he had also been treated for kidney disease in the Roman clinic Pio XI . According to his wishes, Cardinal Moreira Neves was buried in the Cathedral of Salvador .
