Ernesto Cardinal Civardi (born October 21, 1906 in Fossarmato , Province of Pavia , Italy , † November 28, 1989 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Pavia and at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he became Doctor of Canon Law doctorate was Ernesto Civardi received on 29 June 1930, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Subsequently, he was initially sub-rain at a Roman seminary. From 1934 to 1957 he worked in pastoral care in the diocese of Rome and was at the same time an employee in the Consistorial Congregation . On July 15, 1950, Pope Pius XII awarded him . the title of Papal House Prelate . From 1953 to 1965 he worked as a substitute , then from 1965 to 1967 as Undersecretary in the Consistorial Congregation. In addition, he worked as an expert for the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 .

On May 17, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him . Secretary of the Consistorial Congregation and shortly thereafter, on June 26, 1967, appointed him titular Archbishop of Serdica . The episcopal ordination donated to him Paul VI. on July 16 of the same year in St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were the bishops Augusto Gianfranceschi and Jacques-Paul Martin . After the Consistorial Congregation was restructured on August 1, 1967 into the Congregation for the Bishops , he was its secretary and as such also secretary of the conclaves of August and October 1978 .

Pope John Paul II accepted him in his first consistory on June 30, 1979 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry San Teodoro al Palatino in the college of cardinals ; on the same day, Civardi resigned as secretary of the Congregation for Bishops.

Ernesto Civardi died on November 28, 1989 in Rome and was buried in the chapel of the "Brotherhood of the Lombards" in the Campo Verano cemetery.
