Jacques-Paul Cardinal Martin (born August 26, 1908 in Amiens , France , † September 27, 1992 in Vatican City ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy at the University of Strasbourg , the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome and the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1929 to 1934, Jacques Martin received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Strasbourg on October 14, 1934 . This was followed by a doctoral degree at the Gregoriana in Rome, where he was awarded a Dr. theol. doctorate was, and from 1936 to 1938 postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and the promotion of Doctor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Lateran University .

In 1938 Martin joined the Vatican State Secretariat . On June 2, 1941, Pope Pius XII awarded it . the title of Papal Secret Chamberlain and on June 20, 1951 the title of House Prelate of His Holiness . In 1954 Jacques Martin was the Pope's special envoy for the celebrations of the silver anniversary of the coronation of the Emperor of Ethiopia , Haile Selassie . On December 10, 1958, Pius XII appointed him. a canon at the Vatican Basilica and awarded him the title of Apostolic Protonotary .

As such, he accompanied Paul VI's pilgrimage in January 1964 . to the Holy Land . During the trip on January 5, 1964 in Rome, the appointment of Jacques Martin as titular bishop of Neapolis in Palestine and official of the Curia was announced. He was ordained bishop by the Archpriest of the Vatican Basilica, Paolo Cardinal Marella , on February 11 of the same year in St. Peter's Basilica; Co-consecrators were Angelo Dell'Acqua and Paul-Pierre Philippe OP .

On April 9, 1969, Martin was appointed Prefect of the Prefecture of the Papal House .

On December 18, 1986, Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation he had made for reasons of age and at the same time appointed him titular archbishop while maintaining his titular bishopric , which was pro hac vice elevated to titular archbishopric . On June 28, 1988 John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re in the college of cardinals .

Jacques Martin died on September 27, 1992 in Vatican City. He was buried in the chapel of the canons of the Vatican basilica in the cemetery " Campo Verano " and reburied on December 2, 1997 in a grave in his former titular church, Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re .
