history

The diocese of São Raimundo Nonato was on December 17, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. with the papal bull Cum venerabilis from cessions of territory by the territorial prelature Bom Jesus do Piauí established as the territorial prelature of São Raimundo Nonato and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Teresina as a suffragan . The territorial prelature of São Raimundo Nonato was raised to a diocese on October 3, 1981.
