José Lamartine Soares

José Lamartine Soares (born February 27, 1927 in Bezerros , Pernambuco , Brazil ; † August 18, 1985 ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Maceió .

Life

José Lamartine Soares was ordained a priest on October 29, 1950 .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on November 16, 1962 auxiliary bishop in Olinda e Recife and titular bishop of Fussala . The Archbishop of Olinda e Recife, Carlos Gouvêa Coelho , donated him episcopal ordination on March 3 of the following year ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Helder Câmara , auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , and Serafím Fernandes de Araújo , auxiliary bishop in Belo Horizonte .

He took part in the second, third and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a Council Father.

On April 2, 1985 he was appointed Archbishop of Maceió . He died of serious cancer four months later without being introduced to the office. His grave has been in a chapel in Olinda Cathedral since 2012 .
