Josef Tautenhayn , his first name also written Joseph (* May 5, 1837 in Vienna ; † April 1, 1911 ibid) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .

biography

Josef Tautenhayn was a coin engraver at the main mint in Vienna from 1862 , head of the engraving academy from 1874 and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1881 to 1905 . His students included the medalists Rudolf Marschall and Richard Placht .

He created numerous commemorative and portrait medals as well as sculptural jewelry and handicrafts for buildings on Vienna's Ringstrasse , including the allegorical figures of the executive and legislature for the Pallas-Athene fountain in front of the parliament building . He created works for the University of Vienna , the Museum of Art History and the Reichsrat building .

For his services and the high quality of his work, he was appointed to the kuk chamber supplier .

In 1912, Tautenhayngasse in Vienna's Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district) was named after him.

He was the father of the sculptor and medalist Josef Tautenhayn the Younger , the composer Karl Tautenhayn and the actor Ernst Tautenhayn .
