Richard Placht

Richard Placht (born January 4, 1880 in Kratzau , Bohemia , † February 2, 1962 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .

The Sudeten German Richard Placht was first a student at the arts and crafts college in Gablonz , then he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague , where he was a student of Vaclav Myslbeck. He then completed his studies at the Vienna Academy under Josef Tautenhayn . In 1904 he entered the service of the engraving department of the Vienna Main Mint , of which he was head from 1916. From 1909 he was also a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .

Placht mainly worked on portrait plaques and medals , baptismal plaques, sports medals and currency coins . He was the recipient of the Dumba Prize and was also a member of the Artists' Association of Austrian Medalists. On his 80th birthday in 1960, the Kunsthistorisches Museum dedicated an exhibition to him. The Vienna Army History Museum has 15 embossed medals and cast plaques by the artist in its medal collection.
