Papa San
Papa San (born as Tyrone Thompson ; * 1966 in Spanish Town , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican reggae , dancehall and gospel singer .
Life and music
Tyrone Thompson was raised by his grandmother with the Rastafarian faith from early childhood . His father was a deejay of the Black Universe Sound System from Spanish Town and took him and his two brothers to events at an early age. At the age of twelve he started working as a deejay on the same sound system . He is the brother of the dance hall singer Dirtsman, who was murdered in 1993 . His second brother was also murdered at a young age. Early on he stood next to significant artists such as B. Lieutenant Stitchie , Josey Wales or Tenor Saw . He had his first hit together with his protégé Lady G. at the time with the song Legal Rights from 1989. After that he often had songs that were placed in the Jamaican charts under the top ten places, e. B. I Will Survive , Strange, and Maddy Maddy Cry . In 1988 he produced an album with British reggae singer Tippa Irie , which landed in the top ten of the English charts. Papa San worked with other artists such as Black Scorpio , King Jammy and Fatis Burrell . The song The Program , produced with David Morales , reached number 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts in 1994 . In 1997 Thompson converted to Christianity, which also affects his musical style. Since then, his texts have had more spiritual content. Many hip-hop and reggae artists (especially Capleton ) cite him as their main influence. In Soundclashs he is known for his extremely hard and fast (often improvised) lyrics that dissect other deejays without hurting them. Papa San is the only artist to have performed at the Sting Festival in Jamaica, the largest reggae and dancehall festival in the world, since its inception. Tyrone Thompson lives in Weston, Florida with his wife . He has five children.
