Steve Hurley (stage name JM Silk and Steve "Silk" Hurley ; * 9. November 1962 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a pioneer both as House - producer as well as a club DJ .
Career
Hurley became known as a DJ from the Saturday Night Live Ain't No Jive Dance Party at WBMX in Chicago in the mid-1980s. Hurley's mixing style is different from that of other radio or night club DJs who play house because his type of club mix also includes advanced DJ tricks that are otherwise only performed by hip-hop or battle DJs such as scratching , cutting , backspinning and beatjuggling . He published pieces under the stage name Steve "Silk" Hurley and together with singer Keith Nunnally had many hits in the American dance / club charts as "JM Silk" (short for Jack Master Silk), including I Can't Turn Around, which reached number 1 in 1986.
From 1987 he released solo as Steve "Silk" Hurley and had a worldwide hit with Jack Your Body , which was number one in the British singles charts for two weeks , despite Hurley's refusal to advertise it. This was the first house piece to top the charts in the UK. It paved the way for the acid house sound that was popular there during the late 1980s. In addition, the piece broke the chart rules, as the maxi single exceeded the previously valid time limit of 25 minutes. In Europe it was his only solo hit, in the USA further solo releases followed, e.g. B. The number three dance hit Work It Out in 1989.
Hurley also worked as a prominent remixer and mixed pieces e.g. B. for Madonna (Take a Bow) , Jennifer Lopez (Ain't It Funny) , Brandy (What About Us) , Prince (Gett Off) or Black Box (Fantasy , I Don't Know Anybody Else) .
In addition to his work as a remixer, Steve "Silk" Hurley also worked as a record producer, especially in the area of dance / pop crossover. B. for CeCe Penistons We Got a Love Thang (US place 20).
In early 1998, Hurley and the singer Sharon Pass as Steve "Silk" Hurley & the Voices of Life had another smaller chart hit with the song The Word Is Love .
Hurley was nominated for a Grammy for Best Remixer of the Year in 1998 and 1999 .
