The backspin is a DJ technique that was first used in hip-hop . Backspinning describes the rapid retraction or rotation of a passage on a vinyl record . The invention of the backspin is attributed to Grandmaster Flash .

There are basically two types of backspin:

• the completely silent retraction of the plate with the mixer channel closed (with the crossfader pushed aside )
• the fast turning back as a sound effect while the mixer channel of the respective turntable is open. Depending on the content of the plates, the effect is a kind of loud squeak.
