Temple Sherith Israel
Various synagogues in San Francisco bore the name Temple Sherith Israel . The first structure was built on Stockton Street in 1854. Another was built at Post and Taylor in 1870. The current one was built in 1904 on California Street.
Stockton Street
The foundation stone was laid for the first synagogue on Stockton Street on August 6, 1854. The synagogue was on the east side of Stockton Street between Vallejo and Broadway. The building was completed on September 8, 1854. The Stockton Street synagogue was used by the Sherith Israel Jewish denomination until 1870. After that, an Orthodox faction continued to use the old Stockton Street Synagogue. They formed the new Shaare Zedek religious community.
Post and Taylor
In 1870 a larger 14th century Gothic synagogue was built at the Post and Taylor . The foundation stone for this was laid on March 11, 1870. The sacred building was used until 1904.
California Street
The present synagogue is located at 2266 California Street in San Francisco and was inaugurated on September 24th, 1905. The building was built to designs by the American Art Nouveau architect Albert Pissis (1852-1914). His brother Emile Pissis (1854–1934) created the windows and the Milanese painter Attilio Moretti (1852–1915) created the frescoes.
In 1904, the community purchased an organ built by Murray M. Harris for the synagogue for $ 18,000 .
