  • 24 national teams took part in the final round of the thirteenth soccer World Cup. In contrast to the World Cup four years earlier, the intermediate round was omitted. After the preliminary round group phase, the eighth, quarter and semi-finals followed in the knockout system . Argentina became world champion, the German team lost in the final, as in 1982.
