action

Buster is determined to commit suicide after losing his job and his girl. After several unsuccessful attempts to end his life, he embarks on an expedition to capture an armadillo. He goes on a number of adventures and becomes more and more confident as a result. He manages to put a gang of robbers on his own to escape and thereby save a young woman. But even in this case he is unlucky: she is already married. When jumping from a high board into the pool, he misses it and disappears into a hole. A few years later, Buster climbs out of the hole in an Asian garb, followed by a Chinese woman and two young children.

premiere

Hard Luck premiered on March 14, 1921 in the United States.

Frames

For sixty years the film was Keaton's only major lost film until it was partially reconstructed in 1987. The final scene was missing, however. This scene was later discovered in a Russian archive, so the full film is now available.
