The Flint River is a 165 km long river in the US state of Michigan . It drains an area of around 3450 km². The total length with the headwaters South Branch Flint River is 229 km. The mean discharge at the USGS 04148500 gauge below Flint is 18.6 m³ / s.
course
The Flint River arises at the confluence of the North Branch Flint River and South Branch Flint River near Columbiaville , 30 km northeast of the city of Flint . It initially flows southwest, flowing through the Holloway Reservoir , CS Mott Lake and the Hamilton Impoundment . The river flows through the center of Flint, where Swartz Creek joins from the left . The Flint River then turns briefly to the northwest and finally to the north. He passes the towns of Flushing and Montrose . In the lower reaches it flows again in a northwest direction and flows into the Shiawassee River , the right source river of the Saginaw River , in the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge .
nature and environment
In the past, the Flint River's water quality suffered from the discharge of industrial sewage. A change in the water supply from Flint in 2014 to water from the Flint River had to be reversed in October 2015 due to serious losses in water quality. Increased levels of trihalomethanes (THM) were detected in drinking water .
