Mykola Dowhan

Mykola Anatolijowytsch Dowhan ( Ukrainian Микола Анатолійович Довгань , Russian Николай Анатольевич Довгань Nikolai Anatolyevich Dowgan * 15. July 1955 in Talaja , Oblast Magadan ) is a former Soviet rower who was successful in the 1970s.

Career

Mykola Dowhan, who was born in Siberia, rowed for Wodnik Kiev . 1972 and 1973 he was junior world champion in single . In 1974 he first appeared in the adult class at the World Championships in Lucerne . Dowgan received the bronze medal behind Wolfgang Hönig from the GDR and the US rower James Dietz . At the 1975 World Championships , he finished sixth in the final.

Dowhan also rowed in singles at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . He won the second heat and qualified in the semifinals with a second place behind the Irishman Seán Drea and in front of the Finn Pertti Karppinen for the final. In the final, Karppinen won just ahead of West German Peter Michael Kolbe , while East German Joachim Dreifke won just ahead of Seán Drea in the battle for bronze . Dowhan finished fifth, just under 15 seconds behind Drea, ahead of Argentinian Ricardo Ibarra .

At the 1977 World Championships in Amsterdam, Dreifke won ahead of Karppinen and Dowhan. The following year, Kolbe won the 1978 World Championships in New Zealand, behind Rüdiger Reiche from the GDR and Milorad Stanulov from Yugoslavia, Dowhan finished fourth.

In 1980 the Olympic Games took place in Moscow. In the quadruple sculls were Yuri Schapotschka , Yevgeny Barbakow , Valeri Kleschnjow and Mykola Dowhan of the host state. In the second run, the Soviet four took fourth place behind the boats from the GDR, Bulgaria and France. In the repechage, the Soviet double quad qualified for the final by beating the Bulgarians. In the final, the four boats from the second heat fought for the medals and reached the finish line within four seconds, the GDR foursome won ahead of the Soviet rowers and the Bulgarians.
