The 2016/17 season of the Regionalliga was the ninth season of the Regional Football League as the fourth-highest division in Germany.
Regional leagues
- Regionalliga Bayern 2016/17 with 18 teams from the Bavarian Football Association (BFV)
- Regionalliga Nord 2016/17 with 18 teams from the North German Football Association (NFV)
- Regionalliga Nordost 2016/17 with 18 teams from the Northeast German Football Association (NOFV)
- Regionalliga Südwest 2016/17 with 19 teams from the Football Regional Association Southwest and the South German Football Association (SFV) with the exception of the Bavarian Football Association
- Regionalliga West 2016/17 with 18 teams from the West German Football Association (WDFV)
Promotion Games
The champions of the five regional leagues and the runner-up of the Regionalliga Südwest took part in the promotion games to the 3rd division . The winners of the three drawn promotion games with a return leg rose. A meeting between the two qualifiers of the Regionalliga Südwest was not possible.
If teams did not participate or if no team from a regional league was athletically qualified, byes were given.
The following teams qualified for the promotion games:
- Champion of the Regionalliga Bayern: SpVgg Unterhaching
- Champion of the Regionalliga Nord: SV Meppen
- Champion of the Regionalliga Nordost: FC Carl Zeiss Jena
- Champion of the Regionalliga Südwest: SV Elversberg
- Vice champion of the Regionalliga Südwest: SV Waldhof Mannheim
- Champion of the Regionalliga West: FC Viktoria Köln
The draw took place on April 8, 2017 after the regional league match between FC-Astoria Walldorf and SV Waldhof Mannheim . In order to avoid distortions of competition in the last games of the season, the two Südwest representatives were only drawn firmly on May 5, 2017. The first legs took place on May 28 and the second legs on May 31 and June 1, 2017.
