The study day materials science and materials technology e. V. (StMW) is a non-profit association in which 42 universities throughout Germany with study profiles and courses in materials science and engineering have come together and serve as a contact for representatives from research, training, politics, business and the public in the field of teaching. The chairwoman of the StMW board is Angelika Brückner-Foit, University of Kassel .

history

With the establishment of the statutes, the association was founded on June 25, 2007 in the office of the German Research Foundation in Bonn. The basic idea was to give the materials science and materials engineering disciplines a voice in the training and to help them achieve a clearer profile. The first spokesman for the board was Horst Biermann from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

In December 2009, the StMW published a framework plan for the optimization of the master’s courses in materials science and engineering as part of the conversion of the German diploma system to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Increased standardization of the heterogeneous study programs is intended to enable students to switch between the various universities more easily. The ability of the Master’s degree programs to be accredited should also be ensured with a uniform module structure.

Board of Directors and Advisory Board

The board of directors is made up of university professors who teach and research in the interdisciplinary discipline of materials science and engineering.

A close cooperation with the Federal Association of Materials Science and Technology (BV MatWerk) as well as with other institutions - for example with acatech German Academy of Science and Engineering or the German Society for Material Science e. V. (DGM) - serves to name the current requirements of research and industry for the coming generations of materials scientists and engineers and to develop appropriate measures to improve training.

Mission statement and goals

The Study Day Materials Science and Materials Technology eV is based on the following model:

1. Joint initiative for profiling materials science and materials technology

The Materials Science and Technology Study Day (StMW) is an amalgamation of universities with study profiles and courses in materials science and technology.

The Materials Science and Engineering Study Day is the central point of contact for representatives from research and education, politics, business and the general public in the field of materials science and materials engineering.

2. Promotion of integrative overall training concepts

The aim of the materials science and materials technology study day is to strengthen materials science and materials technology as a field of study. Its members are committed to updating and developing teaching by helping to shape the content, didactic and formal aspects of the training.

The study day promotes the transfer of research findings into teaching as well as an overarching alignment of study focuses on national and international requirements from research and industry.

The study day supports the interdisciplinary networking of materials science and technology with the other natural and engineering disciplines and mobility during studies.

3. Strengthening public awareness

The members of the study day are committed to profiling the specialist discipline “Materials Science and Technology” as a basic science and key technology for scientific and technological progress.

The study day actively supports the development and implementation of measures for communication with relevant interest groups. Particular attention is paid to student recruitment measures and activities that highlight the importance of materials science and engineering as a key public discipline.

4. Networking and mutual support

The study day serves the members as a platform for the exchange of information as well as mutual support and advice. Openness and willingness to engage in dialogue shape the constructive atmosphere of the joint work. The study day also coordinates regularly with the working groups “BV Matwerk” and “acatech” as well as the specialist forum MatWerk of the German Research Foundation as external strategic partners.

The Study Day Materials Science and Materials Technology eV pursues the following goals in order to implement this model:

  • to record, systematize and restructure the training profiles of the member universities in order to ensure an integrative training concept for the specialist discipline of materials science and engineering that is recognized throughout Germany
  • Inclusion and consideration of the different approaches and focuses of the various courses of study, study and specializations in related subjects in the integrative training concept
  • Activities in public, politics, business, research and training to increase awareness and awareness of the specialist discipline
  • Direct addressing of prospective students and multipliers as well as the bundling and provision of information and materials to attract prospective students for the specialist discipline
