Mack Hellings (born September 14, 1917 in Fort Dodge , Iowa , USA ; † November 11, 1951 in Kern County , California , USA) was an American racing car driver .

Career

Mack Hellings competed in 21 races in the AAA National Series between 1948 and 1951 . His greatest successes were two second places in June 1948 on the Milwaukee and Langhorne routes .

He competed four times in the Indianapolis 500 . A fifth place in a Kurtis Kraft KK2000 Offenhauser in 1948 was his best result. In 1949 a broken valve on the engine meant that he could only place in 16th place. At his third start in 1950 , he reached 13th place on a Kurtis Kraft 2000-Offenhauser, six laps behind the winner Johnnie Parsons . 1951 , this time on a Deidt -Offenhauser, he retired on the 18th lap with a piston damage (place 31). Since the race from 1950 to 1960 was classified as a Formula 1 world championship race , Hellings also had two Grand Prix starts.

He died in a plane crash in November 1951.
