Johnny McDowell (born January 29, 1915 in Delavan , † June 8, 1952 in Milwaukee ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Johnny McDowell was a racing mechanic and amateur racing driver in the 1930s. He drove midget car races and worked as a racing mechanic for Frank Wearne's racing team , whose vehicles also competed in the Indianapolis 500 .

In the 1940s, McDowell became a professional racing driver and was one of the best American midget pilots. McDowell has raced the Indy 500 four times. However, he could not achieve placements in the top ranks. He made his debut in 1949 and just two weeks after his last start in this race in 1952 he had a fatal accident during qualifying for the Milwaukee Mile .

Since the 500-mile race was part of the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960, McDowell has three race starts in the statistics. He could not achieve points for the world championship.
