George Fonder (born June 22, 1917 in Elmhurst , Pennsylvania ; USA ; † June 14, 1958 in Hatfield , Pennsylvania; USA) was an American racing driver .

Career

Fonder was one of the leading midget car drivers in the 1940s and 1950s . Occasionally he also started in the AAA National Series, including three times in the Indianapolis 500 . At its first start in 1949 , it failed after 116 laps with engine failure, in 1950 and 1951 it failed to qualify. 1952 , he reached on a Sherman - Offenhauser with a gap of three rounds on the winner Troy Ruttman Rank 15. Also in 1954 he was not originally qualified. However, after 44 laps he took over the Schroeder -Offenhauser from Len Duncan and suffered engine damage on lap 101. In the further course of the race, after 141 laps, he took over the Kurtis Kraft -Offenhauser of his teammate Frank Armi until lap 161 - driver changes were allowed at that time. The two reached 19th place, seven laps behind the winner, Bill Vukovich . Since the race from 1950–1960 was part of the drivers' world championship , he also had two Grand Prix starts.

Fonder was killed in a midget car race in 1958.
