Fonder was one of the leading midget car drivers in the 1940s and 1950s . Occasionally he also started in the AAA National Series, including three times in the Indianapolis 500 . At its first start in 1949 , it failed after 116 laps with engine failure, in 1950 and 1951 it failed to qualify. 1952 , he reached on a Sherman - Offenhauser with a gap of three rounds on the winner Troy Ruttman Rank 15.
