William "Bill" Schindler (born March 6, 1909 in Middletown , New York , † September 20, 1952 in Allentown , Pennsylvania ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Bill Schindler was a phenomenon even for the die-hard American racing drivers of the 1930s. He started motorsport in 1931 and drove midget races from 1934. He lost his left leg in a racing accident in 1936. But that does not prevent him from having a prosthesis further seater to drive -race.

In 1940 he won the Bronx Coliseum Championship and in the same year was named President of the American Racing Driver Club for short ARDC. In 1940, 1945, 1946 and 1948 he won their Midget Championship.

He contested 36 races of the AAA National Series and won his only race in a Nichels - Offenhauser 1952 in Springfield .

He was at the start three times at the 500 miles of Indianapolis and since this race between 1950 and 1960 was part of the Formula 1 World Championship , it also included three World Championship races. He could not place in the top field.

Schindler had a fatal accident in a sprint car race in Allentown in 1952.
