Williard "Bill" Cantrell (born January 31, 1908 in West Point in Hardin County , Kentucky , USA ; † January 22, 1996 in Madison , Indiana , USA) was an American speed boat and car racing driver .
Career
Bill Cantrell competed in individual races in the AAA National Series between 1948 and 1952 . He achieved his best result in DeQuoin in 1948 with a 7th place.
For the Indianapolis 500 he tried to qualify five times. 1948 was his best year. He was on the 7th grid position with a Stevens -Fageol and retired after 161 laps with a defective steering. In 1949 an Adams - Offenhauser only managed to get 30th on the grid and one retirement after 95 laps. 1950–1952 he could not qualify for the race. In 1950 he replaced Bayliss Levrett after 106 laps, only to be left two laps later without oil pressure. Because of these laps, he also has a Grand Prix start, as the race was part of the drivers' world championship from 1950 to 1960 .
He was better known and more successful in motorboat races, in which he was initially active as a driver, later also as a manager, designer and team owner until the 1980s. In 1949 he won the Gold Cup .
